In some cases, you may. If you plan to have implants inserted during surgery, we may recommend that you not receive injections for a period prior to surgery.
Blood thinners will need to be held prior to surgery. For some surgeries, you may need to stop taking NSAIDs prior to surgery and for up to 6-12 months after surgery.
It is beneficial to strengthen your body before surgery to be physically prepared to return to your prior level of function following surgery. You may find it helpful to work with a Physical Therapist to find the right exercises for you. Additionally, you will meet with an Occupational Therapist prior to surgery, who will assess your baseline capabilities and needs and teach you how best to participate in your recovery.

Patients are administered IV antibiotics prior to surgery. The surgical site will be prepared with multiple antiseptics prior to incision. Many patients will have antibiotic powder placed in the wound prior to closing the incision and/or have additional doses of antibiotics administered after surgery.
Every patient’s recovery process differs depending on many factors, including your activity level prior to surgery, support system, and type of surgical procedure. Most patients receive physical and occupational therapy while they stay in the hospital and home health therapy upon return home or skilled therapy in an inpatient rehab setting.
Most patients may travel within several weeks or a month following surgery. Some patients may be advised to refrain from traveling for up to three months after surgery.
Dr. Ditty and/or one of his PA’s will see you in the office around three weeks following surgery, and additional follow-up will be determined based on the type of surgery you have had and the pace of your recovery.
Many patients find it helpful to have supervision/assistance for a few days up to a few weeks at home following surgery. If you are unable to arrange assistance after surgery, it may be beneficial to attend rehab at a skilled facility before returning home.
You will likely have local bruising and swelling around your surgery site. We encourage ice for 15 mins at a time should this occur.
Most patients may shower immediately following surgery. Do not scrub over your incision site, just let soap and water run over it and pat dry.
You may not submerge your incision in water until it is fully healed. Getting in the pool or hot tub prior to complete healing may increase your risk for complications, including infection.
Some patients undergoing fusion surgery may need to wear a brace depending on the type of surgery they require.
Typically surgical spine patients will stay in the hospital 1-7 days following surgery, depending on the type of surgery performed. Dr. Ditty will discuss your hospital length of stay with you prior to surgery.
Hospital-based case managers will assist with discharge planning and coordination of care following your hospital stay. They will work with you, your care team, and your insurance company to facilitate any needs.
